Old: Tales of Vesperia
Assume spoilers for the entire game.
5/02/2011.
I also played... maybe 30 minutes of Tales of Vesperia. Too many things that bothered me too fast so I didn't want to play anymore. No offense to anyone who likes it, since I'm pretty sure I'm just a jerk. The game is about as slow/clunky as I remember it being from the demo, but it probably uses Abyss's silly stats system so that should get better later. What probably won't get better is this feeling that a bunch of the English voices of the main characters should be switched around. Like Yuri's voice seemed too deep and like it fits what little I've seen of that Raven guy way more. And then when I first heard Estelle I was like "oh, this must be that ribbonsmage." Nope.
And then the biggest issue which is going to bother me forever... Why the heck is the free run system not at LEAST as good as Innocence's? I knooow Team Symphonia did not make that game. But I mean do they pay any attention to games in the series other than their own? I'm bothered that I can't just get free run started then let go of the button and keep running around in it until I stop moving (this won't make sense unless you've played Innocence). And hurr the "free run attack" thing... wow. Most useless thing ever or most useless thing ever? The recovery time for it is horrible and since it can't combo I can't see why anyone would ever want to use it. Innocence at least made free run attacks practically the same thing as normal attacks. Which is how it should be.
I'm disappointed and I wasn't even expecting much to begin with. GOOD JOB. Oh well. I'm sure I'll find some way to enjoy it since the system's probably exactly like Abyss's, and I did enjoy that. I just need to actually play it. And probably change it to Hard since I did that in Abyss too... ALSO I BETTER GET BACKSTEP SOON BECAUSE IF IT'S NOT IN THIS GAME I'LL FREAK OUT AND START MAKING UP WORDS.

Vesperia is still Vesperia. Repede helps since he's not a bovine crab like everyone else. But this does not surprise me because I felt this way when I played the demo too. Complain whine complain whine.
None of the AI makes any sense. If you set them to the wrong thing they'll randomly do absolutely nothing and only fix themselves when you set them to something that doesn't even make sense (like Raven would only do anything if I had him set to heal... he doesn't even have anything that CAN heal and Estelle on the same strategy stands around doing nothing unless there's healing to be done). I don't get it at all. And then Yuri's AI just stands around, dies, and occassionally tries a single normal attack. I can't seem to fix this with the AI settings. And then Rita likes wasting her overlimit all the time by deciding she must be melee instead of casting spells during it.
Speaking of Raven, I'm totally cool with his voice now that I've heard more of him. BUT THEN RITA SOUNDS SO OOOLD FOR A 15 YEAR OLD. Not Cat'sactressintheAGOTseries old, but still. There are better people than Michelle Ruff to choose for bratty kids! And then Namco let the most obvious typos slip. I mean did anyone play through this for quality-checking stuff at all?
And and and. The bosses. I don't get them. I've died to like each one except for Barbos so far, but I don't really feel like any are actually hard? It's like they all wipe the floor with me and then we trade places on my next attempt even if my strategy is exactly the same. I'm pretty annoyed about the "oh your attacks are reflecting off of it!" thing that keeps happening in every boss fight too. This wasn't fun when ToD2 did it, why would you think I want it in another game?
I might stop whining so much about this soon though. All because of Judith. :( When I first tried her I was like "ew, her normal attacks are horrible" and then as I played around to see if her different directions had better ones, I found out that her up attacks basically work like Innocence's. And she conveniently has a skill that lets her use base artz in the air. So yeah. Hopefully she gets more skills that help with aerial fighting stuff so maybe I can genuinely find it fun. She's also faster than everyone that isn't Repede, so that's awesome too.
I also hope it will stop making me use Yuri and that more of the music is like Dahngrest's. Will all of these hopes happen? I guess I will see.

"I've fallen madly in love with your big, strong... work ethic."
Playing Vesperia so slooowly now. Judith is getting some skills that are making her more fun, but very slowly. And the music isn't awesome and the game still makes me play as Yuri like every ten minutes. I'm exaggerating but seriously I don't want to he's so horribly clunky! I got game overs to the stupid soldiers at the very beginning of the game because I can't handle that level of clunkiness okay.
And uh. There was some dungeon after the colosseum town where the beginning was EXACTLY like that underground passage dungeon in the beginning of Graces. It was really creepy to go through that knowing exactly where everything was. I posted about it on GameFAQs in hopes that I was not alone but I guess I should have posted it on the Graces board, because the only person that replied said he didn't know what I was talking about and then kind of acted like I was accusing Vesperia of ripping off Graces's dungeon design. I don't think I like Vesperia's fanbase very much.
I like how Vesperia's story isn't all "let's save the world" and I've always been in support of vigilante justice, but like... Unless the story gets awesome later or something I really think the only reason people think they like Vesperia's story a lot is because they like Yuri. Because I mean... I'm pretty sure half the dialogue is Estelle being wishy-washy about what she wants to do and if she wants people to help her (which is honestly annoying at this point) and all the forced "drama" Judith keeps bringing in every five minutes by saying "wow, make up your mind aren't you forgetting about something important are you dumb or something."
And all the villains so far are just so lame and cartoonish. It is difficult to take such villains seriously, and when it is it's hard to actually care about stopping them. If I want non-serious villains I will play Symphonia, where it is actually entertaining with how goofy everything is. And that dub! PRONYYYYMA YOU TRICKED ME!

Judith's getting more skills to make her funner, but I'm kind of annoyed at the fact that there are just random attacks that absolutely cannot be used in the air no matter what. And it doesn't tell you, you have to find out for yourself. How am I supposed to remember that after trying them?! All these English names are like. Luna Moonlight Moon something. Maybe a Crescent or two. They should just mark it somehow so I know. :( She's also being all srs and normal in the story now, and that's no fun. I liked her better when she would say seemingly normal things and end them with something unexpected and silly.
And Rita just keeps talking lately. About ESTELLE ESTELLE ESTELLE. We get it Rita, you are a lesbian. Now hush so people can talk about something else for a while! But it's kind of nice to not have Estelle in my party. I got tired of listening to her talk about boobs after every battle. I was also disappointed to find that she was not in her "waitress" costume in scenes after she left. Graces spoiled me. :( I just got so used to costumes and stuff after fighting Malik in a speedo. I guess this game at least allows me to give Yuri a moustache and pipe. And give Repede a miniature Yuri. Sure makes all these "serious" scenes silly.

I beat Tales of Vesperia while internetless for the past two or whatever weeks.
I don't really remember much. Something about hating the game every time it made me play as Yuri. I mean I had to set the difficulty to Easy because of that one fight against Estelle. I might have been able to beat it on Normal after enough tries, but of course it had to be after a lot of scenes and another boss fight. I'm too impatient for that. :(
The fight against Flynn was a lot easier for some reason. Probably because he actually staggered when he was supposed to. Even when Estelle didn't use Cavalry she insisted on rarely staggering so that was kind of a problem. Also, I don't get how Raven is not dead or something at the end of the game but maybe I just wasn't paying enough attention. And go figure Judith does not get the Landing skill until like the final dungeon. Where all the enemies have annoying hitboxes that don't allow me to actually hit them but do prevent me from getting closer to parts that I might be able to hit.
And yeah I don't know. I kind of wish it had become a more free game where once they start the guild, you just take on random sidequesty missions or something instead of suddenly saving the world. The few sidequests I did manage to do (miraculously with how annoying some of the cutoff points were) had some character development and backstory, so it's not like it would be any less interesting if they did it that way either... Maybe I should just play Resonance of Fate again. No! Not now! I still haven't recovered from that 80-90 hour clear time yet!
