Poison Pink: Olifen's Tale
Finally got the Japanese version of Eternal Poison, Poison Pink. Playing in Japanese is just the excuse I needed to justify 100%ing it all over again. I just completed Olifen's Tale, so this is all about that (and the prologue haha). Also this is filled with me making an attempt to use Japanese names of things but ultimately using a nonsensical mixture of English and Japanese ones because my memory stinks so I either forget the names or forget to use them. Have fun making sense of any of this. This is a monster of a post in length, too... I assume the others will be much shorter, except Ashley's and Rondemion's for reasons.
Proloooogue. It's gonna be weird to try calling Thage Thazi. And oh my goodness, whenever she says Raki it sounds like "Lucky." That's so cute. Because he's a dog. Get it? I'm sorry. Also I like her Japanese voice a lot and I also like how they chose an English one that was close to it. Nothing is cooler than dubs that use voices that sound very similar. Like FLCL's English dub makes me explode. When I watched it in Japanese (saw it in English first) I kept forgetting I was even watching it in Japanese. Anyway, uh. I am going to miss her English "darkness COME" quote though. The only other notable thing here is that I didn't read when they told me what the enemy's demon aura could be broken by. Oops.
Decided to start with Olifen's route, and I'm also going to take straight paths this time. In my first 5 playthroughs (really) I only took straight paths through areas maybe half the time. I need to fight a boss in Sanctuary to get Olifen's good ending? Alright, we're going Sanctuary all the way. No jumping over... although I don't think I jumped in my first playthrough of his anyway, I'm still not doing it here or anywhere else until after the first three routes are done. I'm also not fucking doing Desert with Olifen's team again. That was the absolute worst. I hate Desert.
The game start cutscene narrator speaks in English. It was also actually not bad so I was kind of disappointed after getting my hopes up right when I recognized it as English. But anyway. Olifen is Hiroshi Kamiya. Learned this. Got excited. Cringed. Started turning the volume down. Turned voice volume way down because dude, I need my Takashi Okamoto music. All of Olifen's lines sound like he was being way too loud and they didn't bother to do something about it. Actually I think the voice recordings were pretty low quality to begin with. When the Japanese version has worse recording+sound quality for voice acting than the English dub of a game nobody in Englishspeakingland was ever going to care about. What.
So I always wondered how the Majin names would be handled in Japanese, and mused to myself that maybe Keiko Tasaka would sing them all since she sings the operatic pieces in the soundtrack. But nope. Not even opera singing. I don't actually know the name for what this is. It's hilarious though.
I hate Olifen's route so much, ugh. First battle. Logue is worthless even before he has the chance to get behind in levels because his speed is such complete and utter garbage. Levatte dies immediately because he's Levatte. Nobody deals major damage at this point in Olifen's story so unless you're careful you're gonna fail at overkilling a billion enemies, which is what I did because I'm used to taking risks unless it's a boss or something. Kept undershooting my expectations so much, I only captured four Majin. ... Levatte died for a pretty stupid reason though. I should feel ashamed for not looking at the turn order for once when I'm almost always staring at it.
Olifen is really seriously way too loud compared to everyone else. I pretty much give up on hearing any of the voice acting in the story scenes. I'm not turning the voice volume back up and deafening myself with audio warpage and toomuchloud for that. Also, I made Logue almost as fast as Levatte. Whoaaa.
Second fight. Levatte died immediately after failing to do anything reasonable to a Sylph. Jerk. It's like -100 weak to Holy and you did like 40 damage, which Marie did with fire (which it is not weak to at all). Sigh. At least Logue can get slapped around for hours and not die and Olifen became the beast I needed for effective overkilling after I bought a new rapier and sword right after the first fight.
So, uh, third fight... Levatte still died in it but I made a lot more progress okay. :( Time for revenge against Kaelrunis, who I remember being a total dick when I played in English. Since everything else seems to be the same so far, I imagine he's still gonna suck. Hasta Kaelra. Hasta Kaelra. I can do this. I love this song so much.
Lots of things go bad. Something inflicts Fracture on Olifen just before I can overkill some jerk lizard. Halved stats feel so baaad (doushou mo naijanai~ JUST KIDDING). And then I did 116 damage with the Olifen&Logue combo and this was not enough to overkill him where I had him. Uggh. According to my old notes I did the exact same thing here before -- failed to overkill him with almost all the enemies still alive... only I apparently just went with it back then. WELL WHY THE FUCK NOT HASTA KAELRA IS A JERK AFTER ALL. Too bad I decided to go to fucking Desert of all things after that. Desert's battles are ridiculous for their layouts and special conditions and demon auras and god I am NOT doing that with this party again.
Alright. Restarted the Kaelrunis fight. Not gonna mess up this time. Decide I'll try to inflict Bleed on him and hope I can survive long enough to wait out the 1 HP before doing the combo attack. I backattack him twice before this, and both times I get countered. Jeeerk. And then he goes and oneshots Levatte... and Marie fails to inflict Bleed on her first try. Things can only go downhill from here.
... or he can attack and miss Marie on his turn, and Marie can make him Bleed all over the place on her next try! And then to spend literally ages trying to get this turn order to work out. How I managed to live that long without my healer I don't know. I had to speedboost both Logue and Olifen to get Logue to go before Olifen without the boss going between them. What a hassle. At least I somehow managed to do it. Olifen, you've got my vote for STILL HARDMODE.
I also sort of miss how EnglishMarie said "saving the day!" Although her Japanese counterpart for this sounds more serious and emotional instead of loud and campy. I guess that's okay. Besides she's friggin' Mariko Suzuki. Mariko Suzuki was, alongside Atsuko Tanaka, one of the first Japanese voice actresses to ever catch my attention and become a favourite. And she goes and voices my favourite character in Olifen's party. Awesome.
Yay for Shapeshifter over Morpheus. I always thought Morpheus was a lame name. I also still wish the Shapeshifter song played for more than just his attack sequences. You almost never get to that awesome part with the ominous lower-pitched guitars. You just get that squealy high-pitched guitars part, which is alright for a while but eh. You're missing the best part of the song!
And f yeah Renarshe for telling Olifen she doesn't need him, and to GTFO. AND THX HIROSHI KAMIYA, AS IF ALL YOUR LINES WEREN'T ALREADY A CONSTANT REMINDER OF THE RECORDING/SOUND QUALITY BEING BAD IN THIS GAME YOU HAD TO GO AND BREAK FIFTY MICROPHONES YELLING ABOUT RENARSHE. I mean I guess it's not as bad as Mystina's English voice actress in Valkyrie Profile in certain quotes, but gosh.
Alright, second area time. I figured that since I'm not doing Desert with Olifen's story and Thage has to go to Aether anyway, I will do Forest with Olifen. So in the first map, guess what happens! Levatte dies! And then I realize he's only level 5 despite all the buffings and healings I have him do. Darn. I decided I was going to need to make Logue not suck if I wanted this to work, but he's been the suckiest (second only to Levatte himself) since I bought new weapons for Olifen after the first fight. There's no way he can catch up with levels+equipment when he's that slow. At least I recruited Ares... she was really useful in one of my previous playthroughs.
Some bullets for random small things around this part:
• PERFECT PERFUME. It's really the Perfect Perfume, not the Eternal Poison. Can't wait to play Thazi's tale like this. Giggling at her hunt for the perfect perfume.
• I don't remember what they say in English, but those Acrida enemies, when they say "ATASHI DA YOO!" Just made me giggle so much. Especially since I never really saw them as female despite the bustle dress-esque wings part and the breasts with their own laws of gravity.
• I was using this English guide for the special conditions and demon auras because I rightfully don't trust myself to catch all of this, and it said Manti Gigas's demon aura was broken with slash. GOOD THING I CAN READ AND NOTICED LEVATTE ACTUALLY SAID STRIKE.
• Speaking of Manti Gigas. I tend to leave half the enemies alive when I fight bosses (I like going up the left) and so when he ran off to the right where half the enemies were, I backed off because I still had one or two left where I was. And he just sits there until I go over there again. Very patient of him.
• MAAAKURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRROPUSU! so ridiculous, these names. I think that naming is my favourite one.
• so a MAAKURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRROPUSU! was coming at me from the right, one from the bottom, and I had three enemies on the left and up did not exist. I sent Logue to intercept one of them and had Nina walk down and scare the other one out of its wits. It was very amusing to completely disable this thing with a friggin' level 6 little girl.
• And this bee Majin in this narrow passage on the left Forest map between the first two boss stages... He just sits there and lets Marie blast him from the other side of the wall. Doesn't even try to move.
Trinityland and shit gets real. Special conditions for luring him out are to capture the one Sylph (who has Release) and the one Heefler (who has AI behavior that involves executing bound enemies). There are also three or so Trifeeds around and they also execute stuff. I would also like to point out that Sylphs resist everything like mad except for Dark and Light, which, go figure, I can only do with Nina and Levatte at this point. And they are both garbage right now. Heefler's weak to a lot but does resist my best element -- fire, so that's sad.
My plan was to inflict Bleed on both of them (but then I lost Ares before I even got out of the brick part of the stage) and leave a bound Gladelash around for the Sylph to hopefully waste her Release use on. But I accidentally inflicted Fear on the Sylph with a testuse of one of Nina's dark attacks, so she did not use it and then the Heefler came over and executed it. Insurance gone. Still made it though.
This seems like a good time to note that as much as I love how hilarious the naming is here, I do miss the opera singing we had in English. I really did like it. The Thiefler/Heefler's was my favourite (not sure which it was, maybe they were both the same notes anyway), and it was kinda grand for some bosses. I remember it being really good for Amirhage, and I believe Luxaphel.
But yeah, Trinity stage. Really? It's got two Heeflers, two Sylphs, and then two Araneas (massive jerks for all their evasion, crits, and counters). These enemies, dude. Ugh. I made Trinity bleed and hang out with 1 HP for most of the fight until I cleared out the enemies at the one side. Thanks to Ares, actually, not Marie. Marie failed. :( But yeah, then I overkilled him... forgetting that the battle would end when I captured him. I still had the other three enemies alive. And I had to make my choice, because while the Sylph was probably too far away to come and release him, the Heefler definitely would have floated over and killed him. Oh well, Trinity get.
The last Forest stage before the boss is pretty awful. I've only done this once, I believe, and doing it again brought back all the memories. Just having all the enemies come at you at once near the start... makes it hard to not die. The boss stage is pretty bad too, with the same jerk enemies all being really close to each other and the boss. At least they don't come at you all at once.
By the time I killed all the enemies on the left (save for an Acrida that just wouldn't die) and the right ones started wandering over, I was down to just Olifen, Marie, and Irina. By that point, though, Irina's limited healing (and the two heals I'd given Olifen) was enough, because Dahlia Regina just wanted to heal enemies on the first of the two turns she got, and on the second she tried to punch Marie or something. I don't really remember but it didn't accomplish much. Probably just overkilled her with fire because who needs combo attacks when you accidentally almost half her max health when just trying to noncommittally break her demon aura with your second weakest fire attack? Also, I think she's very pretty still. :(
After the Rondemion fight (in which I spent a great deal of time buffing and putting him to sleep) my party was as follows:
Olifen Lv.18
Logue Lv.14 (I don't even know how I got him this high)
Levatte Lv.13 (I finally got my class change at the very end of the fight!)
Marie Lv.22
Irina Lv.10 (I don't even particularly want to use her but I need her healing since Levatte dies)
Nina Lv.11
Ares Lv.11
イゼット, huh. I would say that's Izette. My OST insists on Izat, but I don't remember if that was a translation or the official title. Maybe I should just check since I have the stupid thing. It's probably official otherwise I'm pretty sure I would have changed it. I still like Izat ten million times better than Izel because it's friggin' Thazi backwards without the meaningless H. But maybe that was just a coincidence anyway...
Olifen rockin' it with the evades in the first Sanctuary fight. Two in a row! I don't even know how much damage Garuda does because the one that countered me got dodged (then killed by Ares) and the one that attacked me after also got dodged. I remember them being really painful but clearly they're not if they can only manage to do zero damage.
I also did really poorly with capturing things in the first fight, and that never really changed. There's just so much magicres buffing, auto regen, and quickeveryoneresistfireandair everywhere. What is everyone weak to? ... dark. Marie's got 2 uses of Resgred (I think they called this Malus II in English) that do pretty fabulous damage but it's only 2 uses. Nina has dark but she's only just getting to the point where she's even doing decent damage. Overkilling is going to be really difficult for her. I only overkilled like four enemies in the first stage.
I also love the Majin who just goes 神神神神神神神神神神神神神神神神神 when they ask who Izat is. gj guys. I did a bit better at capturing things on the second fight but died more myself. And Levatte finally gets a fabulous healing spell. Whoaaa. Too bad it's still single target. I also found a typo in a Japanese game for once (my first time, with the possible exception of something from Kitten that me and my friends never quite decided if it was a typo or not). It's on the Doom Shade stage, I believe.

See that? The winning conditions say デルファルクス/Der Falx or something but in the enemy list right below it it's デスファルクス/Death Falx. Good job, Flight-Plan (but don't worry I still love you thank you for existing so that this game, DSS, and eventually Blue Roses could be born). And now that I post that picture I am reminded. Aquamote is totally Aqua Cochlea. We all needed more ears in our life. Actually I don't know what they meant but I'm going with cochlea.
I forgot to turn battle animations on to hear Shade Dragon/Penumbra's name. :( Oh well. All he did was laugh the whole fight while I struggled with the swordjerks and suddenly Garudas doing billions of damage and oneshotting magical people who are not Marie (since she's closing in on level 30). I actually had to summon an Unseelie to help me with the Garudas after Nena and Ares died... Logue also died but he's useless anyway. It was very helpful aside from missing its very first attack. Stupid evade pierce skill.
And then Shade Dragon was a joke once I cleaned up the things that could actually kill me. Marie was doing 484 damage a hit to him, so I just attacked him three times while Olifen went around capturing guys and Levatte and Irina sat there and looked very cute. Easy overkill. So much for all that taunting, loser. Can't even beat me with half my party when your goons were wiping the floor with my full party.
The fight before Luxaphel (what is this japaname, El Stella or something?) was crazy easy for some reason. Not complaining. But the question on my mind the whole time was... can I break Luxaphel's demon aura? I've got Nina (weak) and Marie (only two uses of a rather weak spell) for dark. Not sure if strong enough.
These stupid Lapis Cures, though. Ugh. One attacks four people (my fault) and inflicts Bleed on three of them (ARE YOU KIDDING ME). What I wouldn't give to have one of these Unseelies cast Striking Art on this jerk. It's just really hard for me to kill these enemies since they are still weak only to dark and holy. At least I gave Olifen Dark Attack. P. Sominium also did decent damage.
Alright, so I took out the Lapis Cures and then make an/the Ek Garuda eat Ares' evade. I celebrate! And then Nina gets onshotted by a Garuda. All up to Marie now, to break that aura. Also this stupid Gem Phantasma or whatever on the side I went up scared me so much when I turned my camera on the approach to Luxaphel and saw it. I had totally forgotten about it.
Aaand... Resgred does 300 and breaks Stella's aura. Phew. I saved the second use for overkilling him. But while I was whittling down his health, he kept moving over to the right and attracted a Garuda to heal him, and then he started wanting to heal himself. Trying to tank out all those heals while getting his health to a number I can overkill him at AND eating damage from the stupid Garuda and Gem Phantasma... guh. At least the Unseelie just stood there and looked cute the whole time despite being right next to us. It was easy to get his health down to the right amount with Aero II doing like 40 damage and Olifen's various slashings doing 190-205, and then I just captured him without bothering with the last three enemies. I was out of heals anyway.
Party levels before final boss:
Olifen Lv.23 (crying)
Logue Lv.15 (welp, I tried)
Marie Lv.28 (not even maxed!)
Levatte Lv.18 (TAKE A LOOK AT THIS JILL SANDWICH)
Irina Lv.13
Nina Lv.14
Ares Lv.14 (too bad)
Alright, final boss time. In other words, Reproduction. And by Reproduction time, what I really mean apparently is THIS EK ARANEA CRITS EVERY SINGLE ATTACK/COUNTER TIME. Also this Unseelie is such a good friend. I summoned him again after Logue died in this fight to help me take out the last Chiroptera and to give Olifen autoheals and now he's shooting the boss with arrows. I love these things. She also overkilled that boss Ek Aranea/Scytodida for me. Top tier Majin, right here.
I also captured both Ek Araneas and I don't know why I bothered. Also f yeah, Olifen's kiiieSARE! Pretty easy victory once I wasn't getting destroyed by the Ek Araneas. And aww yeah, baby, show me that 75 EXP distribution from the Unseelie's acts and Irina's subsequent levelup!

• Unseelie = top tier
• Olifen and Logue in the first picture in the ending sequence make me think of Reinhard and Kircheis from LoGH. Oh boy.
• Straightpathing through areas weak to elements you barely have is gah
• Olifen's tale = hardmode, especially if you, y'know, straightpath to get to Shade Dragon. How did I even do this without dark everywhere.
• Ashley shall be next. I mean Harshu. This is gonna be hard to get used to...
