And the Tales of Destiny remake playthrough continues. This part of the game is where I tend to start using Holy Bottles obsessively to avoid all encounters in most areas. Some of the treks you have to make on the world map are just way too long with constant battles, and some of the dungeons have the worst possible random battles... tiny flying enemies, man. They're the worst.
Spoilers through Belcrant and that long sequence of scenes immediately after.
This is just something that's always bugged me. When people like Woodrow and Elaine say スタン君... I know the stress is different and there's a whole extra ん sound at the end, but I can't help suddenly thinking "STANK." I should just be banned from Japanese for life.
Anyway, in Ignasea and Anszoon I pretty much destroyed everything with Hien and Jinrai as Chelsea (party was Chelsea/Mary/Philia/Rutee). At least until Lilith finally learned Rainbow Arc, and then I ditched Chelsea immediately. Rainbow Arc is definitely the best way to deal with tiny flying enemies. Shisha no Mezame is pretty great at that too, but these enemies were all weak to Light if I remember right, so I pretty much only used Rainbow Arc unless something approached me from behind or Rainbow Arc pulled them too close for it to hit them anymore.
Also I really do love being Philia once in a while. I was her for that Undersea Cavern or whatever dungeon but I was just spamming Twin Bomb until the boss (which is when I actually got to use spells). My Philia when I was at Cloudius was so amazing. She had like 600 Concentration after the boss, so it was probably pretty close to there for most of the dungeon. She also had a Chaser accessory, so I was getting all this constant free CC from criticals in every single fight. The casting gets so fast, man, and it was so effortless. I also ruined the boss that way, though he kept being annoying when he started shooting petrification lasers everywhere. mokasui was here protection against status effects is for losers!
... or so I say before I have to fight Elaine. I only had one Sleep Material for some reason (I had two of every other status effect, I believe), and just tried to fight her with that alone. Failed miserably twice, and then I actually got her down to like 10 HP before dying, and then I failed miserably again. Then I gave in and left to buy more... and by more I mean only two more, because I couldn't afford any more and even for that I had to sell some Lens. I didn't want to sell any more of them, even though I had plenty. :(
So I tried again with those three Sleep Materials... and ended up removing my (Lilith) own anyway half way through because I was sick of having to rely on Rutee to heal me while she's busy with literally everything. I just got Lilith drunk with a lovely Liquor Bottle instead since the chances of me dying in a fight like this while I have both my Flash and Cure effects is incredibly small. And I won, finally! Except I ended up using an All Divide once she got below 1500 HP and I started losing control of the fight, so it didn't feel as victorious as it could have if I spent five hours trying to beat her without it. Like when I fought and eventually beat Barbatos for the first time.
Anyway, it's the worst fight ever, I swear. Every time I get to it in a playthrough I'm just in disbelief at how I ever managed to beat it before... it was even worse this time because I know that since my Evil playthrough is in Shusaia, I've gotten past her on that file.
She can't be knocked into the air and your combos on her are basically ruined immediately, you do the worst damage, she doesn't even die after you get her displayed HP to 0 so you're left wondering how long you're going to have to survive... Guilty Resolver is also really rough to deal with since it has such a massive range. There's no way to avoid it if you were right next to her, even if you KNOW it's coming. But hey, that's what Flash is for, I guess. Too bad there is nothing that helps you with having seven tiny flying enemies that shoot three sleep-inflicting lasers each. Even if you're immune to sleep it's hard to do anything with that many lasers on you at once, and they seem to have a longer than normal stagger time. That's the sort of thing that ensures you'll never forget the exact way Elaine says "onegai" and "mada yo!" I know I definitely haven't.
Later I found out I had forgotten to reset Philia's and Rutee's Swordian Devices for the boss after going to get those Sleep Materials. That, uh, probably didn't help. I also found out at some point that Nurse was turned off for Rutee... I have no idea when I did that, but it was probably off for this fight too. I am the greatest.
Also screw Shusaia. I'm not sure if it was the burnout from finally beating Elaine or if it was this dungeon that made me discontinue my Evil playthrough so close to the end, but I had only 6 Life Bottles left by the time I had beat every mandatory fight here this time. Reminder: there are only 3 or 4 of these fights and they're pretty much no different from the random battles (which I ran from, of course, because they were that bad).
Anyway, Rembrant was a jerk too. Philia'd this one since I really needed her damage but the AI couldn't handle the little bots showing up every few seconds. But I can, because I know how to pay attention and spam Force Field when necessary. Seriously though, this fight was really really hard and I hate it too. :( Lasers just do too much damage in this game.
I actually forgot about this scene with Marian after beating him... it made me all sad and watery-eyed again. Because they didn't tell her the truth, and she's going to go and wait for Lion's return (which will never come)... ugh.
Anyway, for Belcrant I finally gave Stan the Narikiri Lion doll. Wasn't too bad. But then the boss started, I checked his weaknesses/resistances... and pretty much gave up that attempt right then and there. I took off the doll and switched to play as Mary once I saw that she had finally learned Bakujin Kyousatsu (like my favourite Mary attack ever). This didn't work very well, but it was mostly Philia's fault because she spent all her time dying to every attack ever, which was totally cramping Rutee's style. Swapped her out for Chelsea and air juggled Hugo into oblivion.
It was pretty nice that there's enough time after the first part of Ambivalence to actually land on the ground so I could Flash through the second half of it. Pretty sure that second part has some sort of instakill chance going on, with how many times Stan died to it immediately. Chelsea was usually too far away to actually get caught by it. But she was doing great overall. The AI knows that spamming Hien is a great idea!
Also fff beating up Kenji Utsumi's character in this game on the day of his death. I'm a horrible human being for finding this amusing. Literally the worst.
No, wait, it's okay. It's already tomorrow in Japan. Phew.
