Old: Blaze Union

Assume spoilers for all of Blaze Union, and also probably Yggdra Union since they're so closely related it's kind of unavoidable. ... I also reference Tales of Destiny and Tales of Destiny 2 way too much in this. Sorry about that.
5/28/2010.
So like, playing Blaze Union. I wanted to get the most out of the Protato I got on the first friggin' battlefield, so I waited... I kept checking after every battle to make sure it wasn't rotten, and then it goes and rots at the end of Chapter 2. BF9 isn't exactly hard or anything, but I don't know it seemed to take forever, especially with all the scenes. So I didn't want to do it over again.
AND THEN I FOUND OUT THAT THEY MADE ALL STAT RAISING ITEMS LIKE, SUPER WEAK. They only raise things by like, one little star. Or some other vague small amount. Lamer than lame. At least now I know not to bother with future items. So a fewww things:
• Shiskia doesn't get immobilized after being the leader of a union. That like completely gets rid of the whole "oh you're a bow guess you won't be countering ever!" problem. So hax.
• Garlot's a terrible character and he should feel bad. At least Yggdra only SEEMED like she was weak, except then once you ignored stats you realized she was the best character other than, like, Pamela or whoever. And that's before she fixes her stats by getting more braids in her hair. We do not need to discuss how she is after.
• I don't know if I should feel bad or if I should feel indifferent because I don't know this game like the back of my hand like YU, but I've only gotten the MVP bonus once so far. Which sucks since the non-bonus is a lamer than lame max morale increase. What good does morale do me in a PSP YU-related game? That's right, none. Because you level up constantly and regain morale when you do, not to mention Refreshment...
• They just had to change everyone's voice. Even ignoring the vast differences between Tomoko Fujino's voice and Mai Nakahara's, if I stare at Luciana's face and listen to her talk in this game it... just doesn't fit. At all. Aegina's a bit better off, but then you realize that her voice magically gets higher-pitched when she grows up. That just doesn't happen. I'm more indifferent to the other voice changes, though I'm against the fact that they're changing in the first place. Except for maybe the people who had voice actors that couldn't handle sounding younger. With all the random cameos (yeah, Elena is TOTALLY actually related to the story guys) it's obvious this is just a big fat fanservice game, so why would you replace the voices that the fans already liked with random ones?
• Wow, Leon. My first thought when I saw him was "oh god it's that creepy knight again." And then I looked at his sprite and thought "Oh, Ein from Riviera." And then I looked at his face again, noticed the hair, noticed the name... "Leon... Magnus?" because I don't know. His hair really is similar, and it is Leon in the Americanified version of Tales of Destiny... Don't know what to think of that.

Game started getting kind of hard. I say kind of because it was really only two or three things. So more bullets as I like bullets:
• Pandora is a jerk. The constant flash attacks! I couldn't even charge Ace Guard because every time it got half way charged, he'd smack me. I did manage to pull off Refreshment twice though. Also, the fact that he had Gravity Chaos kind of didn't help at all with the hating thing.
• I dislike Shiskia's voice actress. The only reason is that I can hear her breathe in after EVERY pause in a sentence and at the end of EVERY sentence. It got irritating fast.
• Pamela's new voice acting is useless, but I appreciate the random Engrish. RUKKUATTOMIII~!
• Drunk Undine's pretty badass once you notice the awesome tattoo on her back. And, you know, the fact that she uses a spear and the only other spear user right now is horrible.
• I reduced Mizer's morale to zero four times in the span of two battlefields. Try to figure out how that happened without actually playing them. And his new voice is terrible. Not nearly annoying enough. Also, he ruined my life. And he has no shoes what. No shoes in his art, sprite, or equipment. What. AND THEN HANDASHI NO MIZERU.
• HONKI TAIIIIIIIIIIIMU. Uh, yeah, started to like Selika. Except, you know, when she decides to use Vise just before falling in a clash that would actually kill her. I restarted some battlefield twice because she kept doing this to me. And then I did it back and all was well.
• Nessiah's new voice makes me feel disgusting. I didn't even like his original voice that much and I hate this one. Great job Sting. Also, they ruined his music by replacing the primary instruments with... lame guitar and a bit of lame strings. Incidentally, I love strings. But there's no way they'd ever fit this song.
• BF18 can die in a terrible fire for what it did to me and my childrens and my family. Why do I have to bring Garlot on a map that's 96% forest?! And and I needed Warp Shoes but didn't realize this at first. I just hated it. :(
• エイミ <-- Looks and sounds like Emilia and is looking for her older bro Gulcasa. エミリオ <-- Has an older brother named Gulcasa and uses Gravity Chaos. エイミア <-- WORDS OF ___ person for Gravity Chaos. Gee, not being subtle about this at all, are we?

I beat Blaze Union before going to sleep yesterday, so of course now I'm bored and need to find something else to fill my days with until I don't have free time 24/7.
So right, beat the game. It was a lot shorter than Yggdra Union (like 20 battlefields shorter, and most of the battlefields seemed to take less time than YU's) but after not getting any assassin or any staff user and missing uh, six whole cards despite looking pretty hard for them, I knew something was up. All of the characters and cards I have missing from the Extra Contents certainly didn't help, either.
So I talked with a friend who is also playing it, and he's still at the start of Chapter 5, but we have some pretty different things available. He got Sanctuary and Ita (stupid useful-sounding male+female character), and meanwhile I got... a bunch of cards he didn't get, Sleip, and Mizer. And according to the wiki the tiger... guy... thing... comes pretty early and has his own card, which starts at 1400ish power (definitely an early thing unless it's pulling a Coma Karma on us). And we already know that Eudy and a few other people that none of us got are playable, so the branching paths are probably pretty complicated. Guess that makes up for the fact that it's shorter.
Like I've said before, it's still YU's core system, so I really can't hate it. And I can't lie, I had a lot of fun with it. Even the art grew on me a little... like, most of it is either just disappointing or downright bad, but then you'll randomly see a generic Undine and you'll be like "oh god that looks so badass" because I don't know. It just really does. I'm in love with the status screen art of those generic Undines in this game. :( The story was really pretty stupid though, let me summarize what I got from it:
Garlot and some of his friends hate the evil evil Emperor Thortie, so they grab a strategist person like this is Fire Emblem or something and rebel. Garlot emos about justice sometimes. Then, his strategist Velleman betrays him for some reason I never could understand (that's what happens when your Japanese skills are as limited as mine) and Siskier (obligatory love interest) gets kidnapped by him and... falls off a cliff. On purpose. There was probably a reason, but like I said, I don't know what Velleman was trying to do and that probably had something to do with it.
So Garlot rages, and after they kill Velleman and Garlot watched Siskier die for REAL (apparently she only looked like she died when she fell, you know just so she could "die" a second time for extra drama) and then angsts about how he didn't even have the power to protect Siskier, and that he's so weak and needs more power etc. So Nessiah tells him how: the power of the Dragon of Purgatory that's dormant in him right now. So he runs off to a temple... place to grab that.
There, he meets his mommy, whose name (ベアトリーヌ) is apparently officially romanized as "Baretreenu." I'd rather pretend Beatrine is a real name than call her "bear tree new." But yeah, she tells him stuff, and that he has to kill her to get the power. So he does, gets the power, and she tells him his new (or true?) name is Gulcasa. So he goes by this name henceforth. He and Nessiah recruit Baldus through evil means (toying with his loyal heart man what a bunch of assholes) and Jenon tells Medoute "BUT HE'S NOT GARLOT ANYMORE, I'M NOT OKAY WITH THIS." At some point Medoute reveals to Jenon that she's the descendant of Gil, who killed Brongaa who knows how long ago. And then they blow up Thortie and his asshole friend Rapis(t) and her stupid Zolfy and 4800 power Revolution. I hate her forever.
Then basically, Gulcasa starts to have some problems that Nessiah explained. Using Genocide too much? Not using it enough? Did not hear and cannot read. So at one point Gulcasa's alone, and thinking "WAIT, YEAH, I'LL BE OKAY. I'M OKAY!" And Medoute shows up and is like "Yeah, actually, you're not." And reveals to him her relation to Gil. And there was something about Velleman. Anyway, Gulcasa's only friends Aegina and Leon are like "GOD YOU'RE SUCH A BITCH." And before Medoute gets her ass kicked by them, she's like "Gram Blaze's leader Garlot is no more. The person you are right now is MAJIN GARUKAASA!!111" And anyway, they talk more, and she says "omedetaii" like she's Barbatos or something, and they're going to kill her but then Jenon begs that they spare her life. So Gulcasa's like "well okay." And they ride off into the sunset. Uh. Well, that last part didn't really happen since nobody has a horse, but yeah.
So to summarize: When Garlot, Eimi, and probably Medoute take off their clothes... they're all Barbatos. Everyone in this game is Barbatos. Except for Beatrine, she's Elraine because she sounds kind of similar. And I guess Leon's not Barbatos either, he's Leon. Don't worry, in the sequel he'll hide his face!! THAT IS ALL.
