Old: Spectral Gene

Assume spoilers for all of Spectral Gene (though I didn't get anywhere close to finishing it).

I started Spectral Gene. I don't know I have the soundtrack for it (and have listened to it a lot) so it seemed stupid to have never played it. It's kinda cool. Ignoring the fact that Idea Factory is still silly and cheap. But it's like they took the type of combat system they're best at (SRPGs, even though they almost never make them) and shoved that territory-conquering and management business from... all of the non-SRPG games by them I've played. That's pretty awesome in my book.
Except then the game froze while I was buying things (was trying to find something that would revive this Neko Nyan Rod-equipped woman because I got her killed) after conquering my first place. THAT STUPID VEST-WEARING CAT SALESMAN HAS TO BE AT FAULT FOR THIS, BECAUSE IT ONLY FROZE AS SOON AS HE STOPPED TALKING. Anyway, the point is, I've had Poison Pink's soundtrack for far longer than Spectral Gene's, I've listened to it a lot more (it's so gooood), and I'm doubtful if I'll ever actually play it. Does this make me a bad person. :(

I HAVE CONQUERED 4/30 COUNTRIES. Go me~! The game also hasn't frozen again, and I'm enjoying it quite a bit. It takes a bit more thinking than a lot of SRPGs do since you can very easily screw yourself over and the enemies are strong. Also some of the combo attacks are crazy. Like this one gun-using person just telekinesised his gun to the other side of his target and shot lasers from there. And there was another funny moment, where I was fighting a group that had a mage, and once the mage was close enough and his turn came around, I said "well, looks like I'm gonna get magicked in the face." ... And then he actually walked right up next to his target to use a spell. Even though magic has range and even though he could have been attacking from the side or from behind for extra damage.
AND I LOVE MORIA SHE'S SO SMART. There's this vestandglasses-wearing cat named Zilva (um, I think), and he was telling Kain "yo I got some fancypants information, if you want it it's gonna cost you 100 gold!" And Kain, not realizing that as he is the leader of multiple countries he is richer than rich, thinks that's way too expensive. So Moria comes along calling Zilva neko-san and offering him catnip in exchange for the information. Which he goes crazy over and accepts immediately. Okay, enough of that for now.

• Figuring out how buildings work and making a Barracks was the best thing I ever could have done. :( Also it's so fun now that I actually understand most things about this game. The fact that all the important options were mostly written with kanji intimidated me when I first started, and I didn't play enough to experiment. So yeah. :(
• SO I WAS REINCARNATING ONE OF MY PEOPLE INTO A WIZARD. And I was mashing triangle for random names so I could get something cool sounding, and then suddenly... I see kurea. What. But Wizards are males in this game! And mine has this super-deep voice. And his name is Claire. Randomly. That was so great that I had to go with it.
• Toska gets so aggressive once she's down to one region. She was attacking every single turn, and always bringing in like 9 strong units (1-2 of which would be commanders, AKA really strong story characters).
• AND I DON'T KNOW IF I SHOULD TAKE THIS GAME'S STORY SERIOUSLY. Moria was giving that cat catnip again, with Enge yet again wondering "WHERE IS SHE GETTING THAT CATNIP FROM" and then there was this scene where Kain and Toska duel because Toska knows (but won't admit) that she's losing and Kain just doesn't want the fighting to continue. And Toska loses because... of a snake. Apparently she hates snakes enough to be an idiot in a battle. :( Thankfully she didn't consider it a valid loss.
