I wouldn't have posted this yet but I'm not going to be playing it, or any other non-Zangeki game for the next few months now that Nintendo's shutting down their online. So here's my notes and progress on EDF4 up until this point.
The Retiarius or whatever enemies make such spacy sounds, man. I'm loving the sounds right now. Also spider legs, everywhere. I'm kind of a little happy that we can chop enemies up and have their body parts lying around. I'm a terrible person.
So yeah, Wing Diver! It's like playing as Pale Wing but with GOOD controls and longer lasting energy! But that's what I get for never playing EDF3 Portable, yet playing EDF2 Portable. I mean the controls are terrible but I settled on the one that lets you pretend the face buttons are a second stick... but it's still awful because things are in weird places to make room for that, and the PSP's nub is the most painful thing.
I love how much more "alive" the cities seem. All these signs, man. Some ant got stuck in Casual Shop KARIN for like hours. Now I can make sentences like that. This pleases me greatly. Also the spiders came really early, wow.
So Stage 17 is ew. :( It's like a stage I remember from EDF2 where UFOs dropped spiders in the river valley place. I have hellish memories of doing that stage in EDF2 unprepared, heh. I had like a Rapier (NOPE NOT USING THAT ON SPIDERS) and some sort of thunder sniper that drained my energy like crazy. It wasn't so bad in this game, though. I guess all my dudes did die after the first two UFOs, but I was able to take out the ones that showed up in the valley a lot faster since I was closer. I did have to flip out about having spiders in my face right after killing them though, of course. I was using some Stringer and AF14-RA, I believe. Stringer's actually pretty cool. It only took three hits from it to down a UFO on Normal. That reload time's no fun, but I mean I still managed to oneround the last UFO even with the 5 second reload per shot thing.
So, stage 18! The shields! I played this with my volume way down... so I actually almost got hit by an air raid sort of (I guess the shields would have protected me). But before that, I remember seeing them and thinking "watch these shields work exactly like Loki's does in Zangeki." So I walk right in. Yep. Exactly like Loki's. It'll be interesting to see what they do with these guys, though.
Messing around with Air Raider is so fun... I was doing this on Easy since I'm going through Normal with the Ranger and Wing Diver first. But yeah, so I had this tank... and I called in another tank because it was almost out of ammo. I fought some ants with my last bit of ammo and ended up backing into my new tank and firing an ant at point blank range. There was the loud sound of everything breaking. But my new tank survived with 155 health! What a champ.
I don't remember which stage, but I think it was the second cave stage. It's really similar to one of the bit rooms in Svaltheim in Zangeki, where Fafnir's gross children come at you from two holes in the ceiling. EXCEPT THEY ADDED SPIDERS IN EDF.
Stage 25 was crazy the first time I did it... I'm pretty sure the entire fight was just trying to fight spiders and getting webbed by the webspiders, which was terrifying since they dragged you right by the tunnel entrance. BUT HEY I BROUGHT A SNIPER RIFLE TO DEAL WITH THE WEBSPIDERS, SO MAYBE THERE IS A USE FOR IT EVEN THOUGH I CLEARLY CAN'T SNIPE THE WEBSPIDERS, RIGHT? I sniped the tunnel entrance while getting dragged close enough to the spider to ruin it with my assault rifle. Resourcefulness! Also doing this on Easy as Fencer was really easy (duh). It would probably be super easy on Normal also. Dash-cancel over to the tunnel exit and the spiders are still so far behind...
Also this has some really glorious dialogue. "It seems the Ravagers are protecting the giant insects with a shield screen." "Why would they do that?" YOU REALLY NEED SOMEONE TO EXPLAIN THIS TO YOU BRO?
Also the Air Raider's Electromagnetic Bunkers are cool. Super cool. I'm also shocked I was actually able to take down UFOs in, uh, Takedown. By using Limpet Splendor I believe and setting up some bunkers around the area I sniped from (right in the middle of all my dudes, so they surely got some benefit from them as well). Those Limpet guns have shockingly good range. Also I think it was in this stage I overheard the NPC dudes talking. "Got a girl back home?" "Good question..." ;_;
Watching ants bounce off of bunkers is great. Watching Hectors try to walk past bunkers is great. These bunkers are truly wonderful. I can also get them to stick at bizarre angles if I put them on a tank and drive around until they slide off! I had some pointing upwards when I was messing around on 26/Crimson (red ants on the beach stage).
Also red ants are actually really tough now. 26 is the first stage I had huge troubles with on Normal... I lost twice, then finally beat it with an assault rifle and Firecracker. These ants are dangerous now, instead of the joke they were in EDF3... I absolutely love the way they move now, though. I don't even know how to describe it. It's so jangly and creepy and also kinda thuggish. So you know they're basically alien gangsters.
28 was also tough for me the first time... And by that I mean I got a game over the first time. Right at the end, no less. After I beat Crimson on Normal I got a new rocket launcher though, and with that I was able to handle 28 without too much problems. Go figure.
Now, backtracking a bit in stages. I like my way of dealing with Stage 20 as Wing Diver. I went in with Thunder Bow 10 and Rapier, and for each shield bearer I just flew up and stood on the top of him. From there I sniped the nests and bugs before turning around and rapiering the shield-bearer to death in seconds. Jet packs are lovely.
Here's some progress statistics before this LONG PERIOD OF NOPE.
Time: 21:56:xx
Ranger Completion (Easy/Normal): 9%/35%
Wing Diver Completion (Easy/Normal): 9%/23%
Air Raider Completion (Easy/Normal): 18%/1%
Fencer Completion (Easy): 29%
Overall completion: 6%
Weapons: 103
Actual progress isn't very complicated yet.
Ranger: Easy 1-6, 28. Normal 1-30.
Wing Diver: Easy 1-7, 11. Normal 1-20.
Air Raider: Easy 1-15, 26. Normal 1.
Fencer: Easy 1-25.
SO THAT'S ALL FOR A LONG TIME I GUESS. :( Bye bye, playing a new game actually after release instead of years later.
